Risk Assessment

You need to consider all the potential risks at each location shoot and outline how you will work to prevent any accident or injury to you, your cast or the equipment.

Location
What is the hazard?

Think about road safety, filming at night, potential damage to equipment
Who/what might be harmed and why?

Think about who needs to be aware of the risk
How will you reduce the risk?

What steps will you take to ensure that the risk is lowered?

On the roads

Getting hit by a car if we are negligent when crossing the road

One of the team could be harmed and even the equipment could be damaged in the process.

Look both ways when crossing the road and make sure that all the team stay together

In the town

The possibility of getting mugged

We may get some of the equipment stolen which wont be good as we’ll have to then pay for it

Make sure that the equipment is on hand all of the time and that we don’t flash the expensive camera about for criminals to eye up.

In the town

The possibility that if the roads are wet due to it having rained then it could cause a slipping hazard.

The team would be at risk from slipping as well as the equipment if they are to be dropped as a result of the slip

Make sure that we take extra care if it does eventually rain.

OH - Reflection on Shoot (London)

When, Where and Who?

On Friday 13th November Brad, Freddie, Luca and I went up to London to commence our first official shoot for the music video. We got the train up to London Bridge and got off to walk down to the South Bank to shoot the first parts of our video. However when exiting the train it was clear that the weather wasn't good enough for the shoot so we had some food before continuing. However the weather took a turn for the worse and the shooting was delayed by another hour, and the battery on the camera was slowly running out. When it had cleared we continued to shoot the first parts of the footage from the skate park to Tate Modern. However after achieving some good shots the camera was running very low and we attempted to get as much done as possible however it was clear that we wouldn't be able to finish the video, so we finished the sequence and headed for the next train home.

My Role

Throughout the day I took the role of the director and camera man as well as becoming one of the characters in the final part of the day. However I wasn't alone with Brad and Freddie both directing as well to help create the most imaginative piece possible on the day. Not only this but Freddie also took part in the filming with me to help make sure that every shot was both framed well and in focus.

Luca cheered up by the Starbucks lady

How useful was the shot list?

Bradley completed a shot list before we left to London with the help of both the storyboard and the animatic to help guide his judgement on what should be happening in each shot. But with the shot list it gave us a clear understanding of what had to be done during the day and gave us a checklist to tick off shots so that we could be as efficient as possible.
Brad praying for some good weather

What are your best shots?

The outstanding shot from the bunch taken from the day was probably the shot where Freddie, Luca and I all stood on this balcony in Tate Modern and Bradley slowly walked away from the camera. First off in a medium shot but with the long zoom lens on the camera it slowly both panned up and zoomed out to reveal the skyline of London. This was a good example of how we turned a negative round into a positive, with the zoom lens being at first a burden however played a key part in the success of the shot.
Freddie offering a 3rd person view on the shots

Any problematic shots?

Unfortunately as mentioned above, the zoom lens was a real inconvenience for a majority of the shoot. This meant that for simple over the shoulder shots it meant that the camera man had to stand a few meters away to even get the right framing which we wanted in the first place. However besides that I would say that the shoot was a success and there is still a lot of shooting needed to be done over the next week from the shoot in the drama studio to a repeat of the Bid borough Ridge shoot and the reshoot of the paint shots.

Group - Practice shoot footage (Paint Footage)

On the 10th November we decided to shoot the paint shots at Ollie's house in his utility room. On arrival it was clear that we weren't able to use the location as we wouldn't be able to hold the sheet up. So we rejigged our idea and decided to film it by the school car park out of the way of the element and wind, however it was clear after putting the footage together that the wind was too strong and I caused the sheet to move behind Bradley which negatively influenced our piece and damaged the authenticity of the piece. Also on reflection the paint is good however its clear after watching it back that we need to throw it him not as hard and at the side of his head apposed to his face as when we threw it at his face it caused it to explode and cover the shot which took the focus away from his face. Finally we also made a fundamental error of not shooting at 60 fps apposed to the 30 fps which we used as we will need to slow the shots down. Also after to talking to Mr Five ash its clear that we need to increase the frame rate in order to make sure that the paint is captured fully.

Class Discussion

After the group discussion in todays lesson we have cleared up a few parts that we were unsure about around the narrative. coming into the lesson we were unsure about what was going to happen in regards to the closing of the narrative as well as what was going to happen with the casting. Not only this but the times etc for shoots was also posing a problem.

As a result of the lesson it was clear that we were definitely going to close the narrative with the friends going to a party. However we were also unsure as to where we were going to film this but this has also been resolved and we will now film it in the drama studio and get a load of friends to come along and dance to make it look like a party. Also we have decided a few dates that myself, Brad and Luca (who we've decided will now be the cast) can all do, which will be the 25th and the 12th. Hopefully this will be enough time to get the majority of shots done for the core part of the piece. Overall it was a very productive lesson and we look forward to timing on the dates.

BWB - Reflection on paint shoot 1

Where, When and Who?
  • We had originally planned to do the shoot in Oli's utility room, however we had difficulty with pinning the sheet against the wall. I then came up with the idea of getting people to hold each corner of the sheet in an external location (field) where the amount of mess made would not matter.
  • We took this footage on the 10/11/2015 during a study period leading into lunchtime.
  • Oli and Freddie where both involved in the filming and throwing the paint over me. I was the actor who stood in front of the sheet whilst the paint was thrown.
My role
  • My role throughout the footage was to be the actor who stood centre screen of the camera in front of the sheet showing no facial expression as the paint was thrown over me.
How useful was the Shot list?
  • We were only filming about 10 seconds worth of footage so the sheet seemed relatively useful, however some of the shots on the lists were unachievable due to the size of the sheet. The bed sheet needed to be larger in order for us to achieve the shots identified on our shot list.
Best shot?
  • We only managed to achieve one shot, there was little margin for error, however there were still faults with the frame rate which should have been at60 frames per second, so therefore we will be filming again.
Problematic shots
  • The entire footage had faults. The framing was incorrect. We filmed at a close up, when we would preferably shoot at a medium close up. The camera also need to be set at 60 frames per second. Additionally I was unable to keep a neutral facial expression and blinked aggressively prior to the paint being thrown. This was due to how hard the paint was being thrown at my face. Lastly we needed a bigger bed sheet. The bed sheet used was a fitted bed sheet oppose to a standard one which is easier to hold and stretch across a bigger distance. This problem is indicated in the picture below.
